Praising God in Every Season
Praise is more than a song we sing on Sunday morning. It is a declaration of faith, confidence, and trust in God regardless of our circumstances.
In Psalm 27, David offers a beautiful prayer of praise that magnifies God’s strength, protection, goodness, and faithfulness. Even while facing enemies and uncertainty, David’s focus remained fixed on the Lord.
This prayer reminds believers that praise is not reserved for life’s victories alone. We can praise God in times of peace, during seasons of struggle, and while waiting for His promises to unfold.
David’s Prayer of Praise
Psalms 27:1-14 – KJV (A Prayer Of Praise)
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2. When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. 3. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. 4. One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. 5. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD. 7. Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me. 8. When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek. 9. Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. 10. When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. 12. Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty. 13. I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14. Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
Reflection
Psalm 27 begins with one of the most powerful declarations of confidence found in Scripture:
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”
David’s praise was not based on favorable circumstances. He acknowledged that enemies surrounded him and that trouble could arise at any moment. Yet his confidence remained firmly rooted in God.
One of the most beautiful verses in this prayer is found in Psalm 27:4:
“One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after…”
Above protection, victory, or relief from his problems, David desired the presence of God. His greatest pursuit was to dwell with the Lord and behold His beauty.
True praise flows from a heart that values God’s presence more than the temporary things of this world.
The prayer concludes with a powerful encouragement:
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart.”
Praise and patience often walk together. When we praise God while we wait, we demonstrate faith in His perfect timing and trust in His unfailing goodness.
Closing Encouragement
Take time today to praise God for who He is.
Thank Him for His mercy, His grace, His protection, His provision, and His faithfulness. Praise Him for the prayers He has answered and for the prayers He is still working on.
No matter what season you find yourself in, God remains worthy of praise. Let your heart be encouraged, your faith be strengthened, and your eyes remain fixed upon the One who never fails.
