Ending the Day in Peace and Trust
As the day comes to a close, many people carry their worries, burdens, and unanswered questions into the night. Yet Scripture reminds us that God never sleeps, never forgets His children, and remains faithful through every hour of darkness.
Psalm 4 is often referred to as a bedtime prayer because David concludes the psalm with one of the most comforting promises found in Scripture:
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
This prayer encourages believers to place their trust in God, release their anxieties, and rest in His protection.
David’s Bedtime Prayer
Psalms 4:1-8 – KJV (A Bedtime Prayer)
Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. 2. O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah. 3. But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.
Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. 5. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD. 6. There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. 7. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. 8. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
Reflection
One of the most remarkable things about Psalm 4 is that David does not pretend that life is easy.
He speaks of distress, opposition, disappointment, and uncertainty. Yet despite these challenges, he chooses to trust God.
David reminds us to be still before the Lord and examine our hearts.
“Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.”
Before sleep, we often replay the events of the day in our minds. David encourages us to use that time not for worry, but for reflection, prayer, and trust.
The psalm concludes with a declaration that many believers have repeated for generations:
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
True peace is not found in perfect circumstances. It is found in knowing that God watches over His people even while they sleep.
Closing Encouragement
Before you close your eyes tonight, place every burden, concern, and fear into God’s hands.
Thank Him for His faithfulness throughout the day. Ask Him to guard your heart, renew your mind, and give you peaceful rest.
No matter what tomorrow may bring, you can sleep confidently knowing that the Lord remains in control. His protection never ends, His presence never leaves, and His love never fails.
