A Prayer Of Trust In God

Trusting God When Fear Tries to Take Hold

Fear is something every believer encounters. There are moments when uncertainty, opposition, loss, or difficult circumstances attempt to overwhelm our hearts and steal our peace.

Psalm 56 is David’s declaration of trust during a season of intense pressure and danger. Rather than allowing fear to control him, David chose to place his confidence in God.

This prayer reminds us that trust is not the absence of fear. Trust is choosing to believe God even when fear is present.

If you are facing uncertainty, anxiety, opposition, or difficult circumstances, this prayer encourages you to place your confidence in the One who never fails.

David’s Prayer of Trust in God

Psalms 56:1-13 – KJV (Trust In God)

Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. 2. Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. 3. What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. 4. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. 5. Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil. 6. They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul. 7. Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? 9. When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. 10. In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word. 11. In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. 12. Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee. 13. For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Reflection

One of the most quoted verses in Psalm 56 is found in verse 3:

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”

Notice what David does not say.

He does not say, “I never become afraid.”

He says, “When I am afraid, I will trust in God.”

That distinction is important.

Faith does not require pretending fear doesn’t exist. Faith chooses to trust God despite fear.

Another beautiful truth is found in verse 8:

“Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?”

What an incredible picture of God’s care.

Every tear matters to Him. Every burden is known by Him. Every struggle is seen by Him.

David found confidence not because his circumstances changed immediately, but because he knew God was aware of every detail of his life.

The prayer concludes with gratitude and confidence that God will continue to guide and protect him.

When our trust is placed in God, fear begins to lose its power.

Closing Encouragement

Whatever fear, uncertainty, or challenge stands before you today, remember that God is greater.

Place your trust in Him.

He sees every tear, hears every prayer, and knows every burden you carry. The same God who strengthened David is still faithful today.

When fear comes knocking, let your answer be the same as David’s:

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
