A Prayer for Wisdom, Purpose, and God’s Favor
Psalm 90 is unique because it is the only psalm specifically attributed to Moses, the man of God.
This prayer reflects upon the eternal nature of God and the brief nature of human life. Moses reminds us that while generations come and go, the Lord remains unchanged from everlasting to everlasting.
More than a prayer about mortality, Psalm 90 is a prayer for wisdom, purpose, mercy, and God’s blessing upon our lives. It encourages believers to live intentionally, seek God’s guidance, and trust Him with the work of their hands.
If you desire wisdom, purpose, and a deeper appreciation for the time God has given you, Moses’ prayer offers timeless insight and encouragement.
A Prayer of Moses – Man of God
Psalms 90:1-17 (KJV)
Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. 2. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. 3. Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men. 4. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.
Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. 6. In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. 7. For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. 8. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.
For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. 10. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. 11. Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. 13. Return, O LORD, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants. 14. O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15. Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.
Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. 17. And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.
Reflection
One of the most well-known verses in this prayer is found in verse 12:
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Moses understood something that many people overlook.
Life is temporary.
Our days on earth are limited, but every day is an opportunity to honor God, grow in wisdom, and serve His purpose.
Rather than causing fear, this truth should inspire us to live intentionally.
Psalm 90 also reminds us that God has been faithful throughout every generation.
“Before the mountains were brought forth… from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”
While everything around us changes, God remains the same.
He is our refuge, our dwelling place, and our source of strength.
The prayer concludes with a beautiful request:
“And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us.”
Moses desired that God’s favor rest upon His people and that their labor would have lasting purpose and meaning.
What a wonderful prayer for every believer today.
Closing Encouragement
Life moves quickly, but God remains eternal.
Take time to seek His wisdom, trust His timing, and dedicate your life to His purpose.
Ask Him to help you make the most of the days He has given you.
Ask Him to establish the work of your hands and allow your life to reflect His glory.
When your life is built upon God, your labor is never wasted and your purpose is never lost.
May the beauty of the Lord be upon you, and may His favor guide your steps each day.
Pathway365 Insight
The heart of Psalm 90 may be found in this simple request:
“Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Moses wasn’t asking for more years.
He was asking for wisdom with the years God had already given him.
That’s a powerful lesson for every believer. A meaningful life is not measured merely by its length, but by how faithfully it is lived for the glory of God.
