Walking by Faith, Not by Sight – Steps Towards Eternity Daily Devotional

Keeping Our Eyes on Jesus in Life’s Storms

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
-2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)

Life presents challenges that test our faith, making us question whether we are truly walking by faith or being swayed by what we see. There will always be circumstances trying to pull our focus away from Jesus, just as Peter experienced when he stepped out of the boat onto the Sea of Galilee.

At first, Peter walked on the water because his eyes were fixed on Jesus. But the moment he turned his attention to the wind and waves, fear crept in, and he began to sink. In desperation, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately, Jesus stretched out His hand, caught him, and said, “O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” (Matthew 14:31, KJV).

Take a moment to reflect on this. Peter actually walked on water! His faith allowed him to do the impossible. Yet, when doubt entered his heart, he began to sink. Faith lifted him; fear pulled him down.

But notice something important—Jesus still rescued him.

Jesus doesn’t abandon us when our faith wavers. Instead, He reaches out, lifts us up, and teaches us. His rebuke to Peter was not to condemn him, but to help him realize that his faith needed to grow stronger. Faith is not a one-time event—it is a continuous journey.

No matter what storms we face, we must keep our eyes on Jesus rather than focusing on how strong the storm appears. If we believe in Him, rather than the circumstances around us, we will walk by faith and not by sight.

Reflective Questions:

1.    How has my faith grown over the years?
    2.    Are there people, places, or situations that cause me to take my eyes off Jesus?
    3.    How can I strengthen my faith so that I trust God more than my circumstances?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,
I come before You in the name of Jesus. Show me the areas in my life where I am walking more by sight than by faith. Strengthen my trust in You so that, like Peter, I can step out in faith—even in the midst of life’s storms. Help me believe in You more than what I see. I want to have the kind of faith that walks on water.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
