Finding Peace and Provision in the care of the Good Shepherd

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
— Psalm 23:1 (KJV)

Responsibilities of a Shepherd
    •    Leading the Flock:
    •    Guiding the sheep to safe pastures for grazing.
    •    Ensuring a steady supply of clean water.
    •    Planning routes to avoid danger or overgrazing.
    •    Providing Protection:
    •    Guarding the sheep against predators such as wolves, bears, or thieves.
    •    Building or maintaining secure sheepfolds or enclosures for nighttime safety.
    •    Using tools like a staff or sling to deter threats.
    •    Caring for the Flock’s Well-being:
    •    Monitoring for signs of illness, injury, or stress.
    •    Administering medical care when needed, such as cleaning wounds or treating infections.
    •    Assisting with birthing lambs and nurturing vulnerable young sheep.
    •    Maintaining Unity:
    •    Preventing sheep from straying by constant oversight.
    •    Searching for and retrieving any lost or wandering sheep.

The list above provides a brief look at what a human shepherd does for the flock under their care. After reading it, it’s no wonder the Bible refers to us as sheep and to the Lord as our Shepherd.

Sheep don’t worry about their needs because their shepherd has everything under control. With the Lord as our Shepherd, we will never lack anything. He supplies our every need—and then some.

There are countless things the Lord does for us that often go unnoticed. He guards us against unseen evils, guides our steps, and ensures we end up where we are supposed to be. Even when we wander off, there is no place so far or so dark that He won’t come and bring us back to safety.

The Lord is our Shepherd, faithful to us every step of the way.

Prayer

Dear Lord,
Thank You for being my Shepherd, for caring for me in ways I often fail to notice. You guide me to safety, provide for all my needs, and protect me from dangers seen and unseen. Forgive me for the times I’ve wandered or doubted Your care. Help me to trust You fully and to follow where You lead. Remind me that no matter how far I stray, You are always ready to bring me back into Your loving arms. I praise You for Your faithfulness and Your abundant love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
