Smoother Than Butter – Steps Towards Eternity Daily Devotional

When Words Cut Deep: Discernment in a World of Deception

“The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.”
-Psalm 55:21 (KJV)

In Biblical times, butter was a delicacy — rare, fresh, and made in small batches because it didn’t last long. It was smooth, rich, and highly sought after.

Think about butter today — when you take it out of the refrigerator, it’s soft and effortless to spread. It appeals to almost everyone. It’s comforting. It enhances whatever it touches.

So when David says, “The words of his mouth were smoother than butter…” — he’s painting a vivid picture.

This wasn’t just a harsh enemy coming against him. In the verses before, David reveals this person was “a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.” (Psalm 55:13)

This was someone close. Someone trusted. Someone he walked with in the house of God.

Their words felt good…
But their heart was at war.

  • It sounded soft — but it was setting him up.
  • It felt sweet — but it was bait for betrayal.
  • It comforted the ears — while targeting the soul.

It hurts deeply when betrayal comes from someone close — a friend, spouse, or even a family member. The words may have sounded loving — but they were only setting a trap.

But Here’s The Good News:

Whatever the situation — God can use it for your good.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28 (KJV)

Sometimes God allows betrayal not to destroy us — but to reposition us.

David didn’t have to retaliate in bitterness or threats — and neither do we. We can forgive, show love, and trust God’s purpose.

Remember Jesus on the cross:
“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

Love conquers all. Truth endures. And God’s purpose will always prevail.

Reflective Questions:

  • Has someone ever spoken words that seemed sweet — but later proved false?
  • How did God use that situation to teach or strengthen you?
  • What does it look like to love and forgive — even when someone has betrayed you?

Prayer:

In Jesus name I come before You, Lord — thank You for being my refuge in every storm. Help me to recognize truth, walk in love, and forgive those who have hurt me. Let my heart remain pure — even when others speak words smoother than butter but filled with war. I trust that You will work all things for my good.
In Jesus name, Amen.
