Speaking with the Love and Wisdom of Christ
“Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”
—Colossians 4:6 (KJV)
When Jesus spoke, He was always on point and never shied away from telling the truth, but He did so with grace. When we think of Jesus, we often reflect on how He was without spot or blemish—the very definition of perfection. He is our Lord, our Savior, and our example. Everything we do, say, and think should be modeled after Him.
Our words carry power—they can build up or tear down, heal or wound. That’s why Paul exhorts us to let our speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt.
Grace in our words reflects Christ’s love, patience, and kindness. It means speaking in a way that edifies, encourages, and points others to the truth. However, our speech must also be seasoned with salt—filled with wisdom, truth, and the preserving power of God’s Word. Salt enhances flavor and prevents decay, just as godly speech brings clarity and righteousness into conversations.
Reflective Questions:
• Am I speaking with grace, showing the love of Christ?
• Is my speech seasoned with salt, upholding truth and wisdom?
• Do my words reflect the character of my Savior?
Remember this:
A well-seasoned response balances truth and love. Jesus exemplified this perfectly—whether He was correcting the Pharisees, comforting the brokenhearted, or instructing His disciples, His words were always full of grace and truth.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to guard my tongue and speak words that reflect Your love and wisdom. Let my speech be gracious yet bold, always pointing others to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
