Loving Through Betrayal: The Unconditional Love of Christ – Steps Towards Eternity Daily Devotional

Would You Wash the Feet of Your Betrayer? Learning from Jesus’ Ultimate Act of Love

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
John 13:14 (KJV)

Jesus knew Judas would sell him out! Jesus still washed his feet.

Would we do the same for our enemies—even our very worst enemies?

Some argue that foot washing isn’t relevant today, while others believe it still holds significance. Regardless of where you stand, the deeper truth of this scripture is undeniable: Jesus demonstrated unconditional love, even to the one who sold Him out.

Judas placed a price on his friendship with Jesus—30 pieces of silver, worth less than $500 today. Imagine investing years into a relationship, only to be betrayed for a few hundred dollars. How would you respond? Would you retaliate, distance yourself, or offer grace?

Jesus chose love. He humbled Himself and washed the feet of a man who had already arranged His downfall. This act of servanthood and selflessness reflects the purest form of love—a love that expects nothing in return, a love that endures betrayal, a love that defines Christ Himself.

Reflective Questions:

  •    Do my actions reflect Christ to the fullest?
    •    Have I encountered a “Judas” in my life, and did I respond as Christ would?
    •    How can I represent Christ better in my daily interactions?
    •    Am I willing to love one person while withholding love from another?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come to You in Jesus’ name, asking for the wisdom and strength to love as He did. When I face betrayal, give me the grace to respond with humility, not bitterness. Forgive me for the moments I have failed to show Christlike love. Holy Spirit, guide me to embody the selfless love of Jesus—a love that never wavers, never ceases, and never depends on how others treat me. Let my actions bring glory to You in all I do.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
