Let Your Light Shine – Steps Toward Eternity Daily Devotional

Living with Integrity: When Good Works Steps Toward Eternity

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
-Matthew 5:16 (KJV)

When we do the right things in life (good works), we reflect Christ, and His marvelous light shines through us, glorifying God in heaven. When we align our lives with the Word, it becomes evident to the world around us. As children of God, we do not pattern ourselves after the world—we pattern ourselves after Jesus, with great consistency. This is why 1 Peter 2:9 says we are a peculiar people.

You can always tell there’s something different about God’s people—they stand out from the rest of the world. We also benefit greatly by doing what is right, compared to when we don’t.

For example:

When you lie, you constantly worry about someone discovering the truth and trying to keep your stories straight, which usually leads to even more lies.
Remember: one lie is often followed by many lies.

When you cheat or steal, you live in fear of getting caught.

Whenever we do anything wrong, it brings with it the burden of worrying about the consequences that may follow.

However, when you choose to do what is right, you live without those burdens. When you put God first, your life begins to align with righteousness. God becomes your confidence, and there is no fear of, “What if I get caught?”, “What if they take me to jail?”, or “How will I fix it if they find out what I’ve been up to?”

“For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.”
-Proverbs 3:26 (KJV)

Reflective Questions:

•    Are there areas in my life where I’m willing to sacrifice doing what’s right for worldly pleasures?
    •    Do my words, thoughts, and actions reflect what Jesus would do?
    •    Do I do good works behind closed doors, even when no one else sees?⸻

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,
I come before You in the name of Jesus, asking that the Holy Spirit reveal any areas in my life where I need to grow in doing what is right. Your Son lived a perfect life and never knew sin. My desire is to be more like Him and to bring joy to You every day. Strengthen me to live righteously, and let Your light shine through me always.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
