He Must Increase, But I Must Decrease: Steps Towards Eternity Daily Devotional

Embracing Spiritual Transformation

“He must increase, but I must decrease.”

— John 3:30 (KJV)

Each day, I surrender to the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to shape me so that I may reflect Christ in every aspect of my life. This process is both intentional and transformative, requiring a willing heart and a commitment to leaving behind old habits.

When I speak, the old self must decrease, and the new self in Christ must increase.

When I think, the old self must decrease, and the new self in Christ must increase.

When I act, the old self must decrease, and the new self in Christ must increase.

The more we allow Jesus to grow within us, the more aligned we become with His purpose. This transformation glorifies Him, for He is the way, the truth, and the life. As we deny ourselves and put Christ first, every step we take becomes a testament to His increasing presence in our lives.

How Does Jesus Increase in Us?

Jesus grows in us when we make Him our priority.

Through Prayer: A dedicated prayer life invites His presence and molds our hearts.

Through Fasting: Fasting disciplines our physical selves, strengthening our dependence on God.

Through Meditation: Meditating on Scripture renews our minds and centers our focus on Him.

In our journey, we must intentionally renounce old ways:

• I will rebuke my old way of thinking.

• I will rebuke my old way of speaking.

• I will rebuke my old desires.

• I will put Jesus first in every aspect of my life.

When we put Jesus first, everything else falls into its rightful place. As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:33 (KJV):

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Living for Christ Daily

Jesus is the only path from this life to the eternal Kingdom of God. Each day, by surrendering our old selves and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us, we take deliberate steps that lead to an ever-increasing presence of Christ in our lives.

Let today be a day of surrender. Allow Christ to increase, and let your old self decrease.

Reflective Questions

Personal Renewal: What specific habits or thoughts am I willing to let go of today to create space for Christ?

Daily Practice: How can I intentionally incorporate prayer, fasting, or meditation into my daily routine to deepen my relationship with Jesus?

Spiritual Alignment: In what practical ways can I put Jesus first in my decisions and interactions?

Growth Reflection: Reflecting on your journey, how have you seen the old self decrease and the new self in Christ increase over time?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

I come before You with a humble heart, ready to let go of the old and embrace the new. Help me to diminish my self-will so that Your love and truth can shine through me. Guide my thoughts, words, and actions as I seek to follow Jesus daily. May Your Spirit lead me to greater transformation and alignment with Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
