God Holds the Earth in His Hands – Steps Toward Eternity Daily Devotional

Understanding God’s Sovereignty and Our Hope in Christ’s Return

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
-Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

In six days, God created the heaven and the earth and all their hosts. He spoke, and it was done. He formed, and it stood fast. There was no struggle, no worry, no hesitation in the work of His hands — only perfect power and authority.

Never once did God question His creation. He didn’t wonder, “What if a meteor hits the earth and destroys it?” or “What if a volcano erupts and ends everything?” These thoughts never entered His mind. He is the Alpha and the Omega — the beginning and the end of all things.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
-Revelation 22:13 (KJV)

There is no power greater than God. All wisdom, knowledge, and understanding flow from Him. It is because of Him that the earth still stands today. While some fear that an asteroid or disaster will inevitably destroy the world, the children of God rest in a greater truth — nothing happens outside of His will.

When the earth passes away, it will not be because of chance or disaster. It will be because God has declared that it is time.

As He has promised, there will be a new heaven and a new earth.

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
-Revelation 21:1 (KJV)

Those who belong to Christ do not live in fear of meteors, asteroids, or catastrophic events. Our hope is not rooted in this world but in the glorious return of Jesus Christ — the true end of this present earth and the beginning of eternity with God.

Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
-Revelation 1:7 (KJV)

This is our expected end — the promise of a world with no more death, no more sorrow, and no more pain.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
-Revelation 21:4 (KJV)

Reflective Questions:

  •  Do you find yourself fearful of natural disasters or world-ending events? How can you shift your focus to God’s sovereignty in these areas?
  • How does knowing that God holds the future in His hands impact your daily life and decisions?
  • What does the promise of a new heaven and a new earth mean to you personally?
  • In what ways can you actively hope for Christ’s return, and how does that influence how you live today?

Prayer:

In Jesus’ name I come before You, Lord, full of awe for Your greatness and power. You are the Alpha and the Omega, the Creator of all things. Thank You for the peace and security that comes from knowing that You hold the earth and our lives in Your hands. Help me to focus on Your eternal promises, trusting that You are in control of all things. As I wait for Your return, I pray that I will live with hope and courage, knowing that You will wipe away every tear and end all sorrow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
