Established in Truth – Steps Towards Eternity Daily Devotional

Lies may spread, but only the truth will stand forever.

The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Proverbs 12:19 (KJV)

Lies are fragile. One lie often requires another to sustain it, creating a web that eventually unravels. In contrast, the truth stands firm—it needs no reinforcement because it is self-evident. Scripture reminds us that truth endures forever, while a lying tongue lasts only for a moment.

As Christians, we are called to walk in truth and rejoice in it. However, not everyone values the truth. Some people are more comfortable with lies, whether telling them or believing them. When others lie to us or about us, it may feel like the deception will never end. But God assures us that falsehood is fleeting.

There are people who will never accept the truth because lies serve them better. It is up to us to decide how long we will endure such deception in our lives. If someone is willing to lie to you, they are just as likely to lie about you.

For example, those who know me understand that I do not consume alcohol. Yet, if they see me holding a green bottle of Perrier water, they might start gossiping, falsely claiming they saw me drinking. When confronted, they will deny spreading the lie, adding another layer of deception. A lie has no backbone—it is cowardly, seeking to harm whoever will listen.

But lies cannot stand forever. Though deceit may cause temporary harm, truth is unshakable. It is established by God, and in the end, it will always prevail. Let us hold fast to the truth, refusing to be shaken by the fleeting whispers of a lying tongue.

Reflective Questions:

1.    Have you ever been the victim of lies or gossip? How did it affect you?
    2.    How do you respond when faced with dishonesty?
    3.    Are there any relationships in your life where you need to establish stronger boundaries against deception?
    4.    How can you ensure that you are living in truth and not participating in spreading falsehoods?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, You are the God of truth, and in You, there is no deceit. Help me to walk in honesty and integrity, even when surrounded by lies. Give me wisdom to discern deception and strength to stand firm in truth. Guard my heart against bitterness when others spread falsehoods about me, and remind me that their words will not last. Let my words be pleasing to You, and may I always reflect Your truth in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
