“Choosing Christ Over the World: A Reflection on True Profit” – Steps Towards Eternity Daily Devotional

What Does It Profit a Man? Finding Freedom from Worldly Temptation”

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Mark 8:36-37 (KJV)

The world offers many things: fame, fortune, lust, drugs, sex, violence, power, and just about anything imaginable. Some things it offers are legal, and other things aren’t. As God’s children, we know that while some things may be lawful to the world, it doesn’t make them right with God. The world will always have its selling points, which many come cleverly disguised as harmless fun for a night or weekend. Other times, things appear to be the right way because everyone else is doing it.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Proverbs 14:12 (KJV)

As God’s children, we know that Jesus Christ bought and paid for us in full, and when we follow after Him, we will not be entangled in the snares of the world.

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

1 Corinthians 6:20 (KJV)

We understand there is no profit in sin, so when the world comes with all its sought-after lust, we know and recognize it is not for us because we are of God, and He has made known to us what we are to do and not do.

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

1 John 2:16 (KJV)

Reflective Questions:

In certain situations, do I let myself become too consumed with worldly passions?

“Am I allowing certain worldly desires when it is convenient for me?”

In all of my thoughts, words, and actions, do they reflect the world or Christ?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I come before you in the name of Jesus, and I ask that any areas of my life that are a reflection of the world, even the ones that I may overlook, help me identify them and correct them. I want to be more like your Son every day. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
