Called to Serve in Love – Steps Towards Eternity Daily Devotional

Serving Others in Love: A Life Led by the Spirit

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”
-Galatians 5:13 (KJV)

As followers of Christ, we have been called to true freedom—not a freedom to indulge in selfish desires, but a freedom to serve others in love. Jesus Himself, though Lord of all, came to serve rather than to be served. If we claim to follow Him, our lives should reflect His heart of service.

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. -Mark 10:45 (KJV)

Each day, we must set our minds on Christ, who perfectly embodied the fruits of the Spirit:

Fruits of the Spirit
    •    Love – Unselfish, God-centered affection and care.
    •    Joy – Deep, lasting happiness in God, not just temporary emotion.
    •    Peace – Inner calm and trust in God’s control.
    •    Patience (Longsuffering) – Endurance through trials, without anger or frustration.
    •    Kindness (Gentleness) – Compassion, consideration, and a tender heart.
    •    Goodness – Righteousness and a desire to do what is right.
    •    Faith (Faithfulness) – Trust in God and loyalty in relationships.
    •    Humility (Meekness) – Strength under control, putting others first.
    •    Self-control (Temperance) – Mastery over desires, emotions, and actions.

If we are to serve at the highest level, Christ must be more than just our Savior—He must be our Lord and Master. His will must become our will. As He came to serve, we must ask ourselves: How can we serve others in love—in our homes, our families, and our communities? Serving isn’t just about big acts; it’s about everyday moments of kindness, sacrifice, and humility. When we allow the Holy Spirit to transform us, service becomes a natural outflow of a heart surrendered to God.

Reflective Questions:

  • How does true Christian freedom lead us to serve others rather than focus on ourselves?
  • Which fruit of the Spirit do you need to develop more to serve others better?
  • What small act of service can you do today to reflect Christ’s love?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the freedom I have in Christ. Help me to use this freedom not for selfish desires but to serve others in love. Fill me with the fruits of the Spirit so that my life reflects Your character. Teach me to serve with humility and joy, just as Jesus did. May my actions bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
