Bringing Every Thought to Obedience – Steps Toward Eternity Daily Devotional

Guarding Your Mind and Imagination with Christ’s Truth

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV)

What shapes your imagination? What drives your daily thoughts?

In today’s world, our imaginations are constantly under attack. With imagery so readily available on smartphones and social media platforms, our thoughts can easily run wild if left unchecked. It’s easy to let ideas and fantasies take root, influencing our decisions and emotions. But the danger lies in allowing imaginations to exalt themselves above the knowledge of God.

To “exalt” means to hold something in very high regard. When anything other than Christ holds that place in our minds, it competes for the throne of our hearts. Whether it’s worldly desires, fears, or distractions, if it isn’t centered on Jesus, it doesn’t deserve to dominate our thoughts.

The Apostle Paul challenges us to bring “every thought to the obedience of Christ.” This means actively choosing to align our imaginations with God’s truth. Consider the messages you hear on Sundays and the thoughts that occupy your mind throughout the week. Do they reflect the mind of Christ? Or do they allow room for desires that pull you away from God’s will?

We must be vigilant in examining our thoughts and imaginations. By surrendering them to Christ, we protect our minds and hearts from influences that lead us away from Him.

Reflective Questions:

  1.    What thoughts or imaginations most often compete for your attention?
    2.    Are there influences in your life that exalt themselves above the knowledge of God?
    3.    How can you practice bringing every thought to the obedience of Christ today?

Prayer:

Lord, help me to bring every thought into obedience to Christ. Guard my mind against distractions and imaginations that exalt themselves above Your truth. Teach me to meditate on Your Word and align my desires with Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If it isn’t about Jesus Christ, rebuke it, avoid it, and don’t think about it.
