Living the word: Becoming a Doer, Not Just a Hearer
“But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
—James 1:22 (KJV)
The Word of God has the power to transform anyone who reads it and obeys its teachings. Repentance and seeking forgiveness through Jesus Christ—the only way to heaven—are essential. But imagine hearing this truth and not acting on it. Transformation takes action on our part. We must repent and ask for forgiveness in the name of Jesus, but it doesn’t end there. We are called to read the Bible and follow its guidance.
The more we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the more our lives are transformed. There is nothing you will ever face on this earth that the Bible cannot prepare you for. The more you read and apply its teachings, the more fulfilling and purposeful your life will become. We must not only hear the Word but apply it daily.
At times, we may feel stuck in bad habits. However, as we read the Bible and sincerely repent, those bad habits fade, replaced by godly habits that align us with God’s will. When we commit to living according to Scripture, we create an environment where the Holy Spirit is pleased to dwell and work within us.
The Bible is training us for the coming Kingdom of the Lord. As Christians, we are called to read the Word daily and focus on living it out. Jesus, who is the Word made flesh, exemplified this perfectly. Even though He was without sin and in no need of repentance, He was still a doer of the Word, living in complete obedience to the Father. He is our ultimate example to follow.
Reflection Questions:
1. What specific steps can you take today to move from hearing the Word to doing it?
2. Are there areas in your life where you struggle to follow God’s Word? How can you bring those areas before Him in prayer?
3. How does Jesus’ example as a doer of the Word inspire you in your daily walk?
Prayer
In the name of Jesus, I come before You, Father, and ask for Your guidance. Help me to see the areas in my life where I need to grow and become a better doer of Your Word. Open my eyes to what I cannot see on my own. I want to represent You to the fullest of my ability. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Remember to be who your Bible has taught you to be.
