Serving God in Every Season – Steps Towards Eternity Daily Devotional

A Purpose in Every Task

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” – Colossians 3:23

There are seasons in life when we find ourselves doing things we would rather not—whether it’s working a job that feels stagnant, fulfilling daily responsibilities that seem mundane, or navigating circumstances that feel beyond our control. When we think of this verse, we often apply it to our jobs, but its meaning extends far beyond the workplace.

A lot of times, it’s easy to want God to move us away from something, someone, or someplace that we don’t desire to be around. We pray for a way out, believing that change is the answer. But no matter where we are and what we are doing, God could move us—but often, He chooses to use us right where we are. If you’ve been called by God to do something but find yourself still in the same place, know that you are there for a reason.

Think back to when you were first saved. Where were you? What were you doing? Perhaps your job, living conditions, or daily routine were not ideal, yet God called you right where you were. He was not waiting for you to reach a “better” place before He began working in your life.

Just as Jesus called fishermen like Peter, Andrew, James, and John in the middle of their daily work, He calls us in the midst of our responsibilities. These men were simply going about their business when Jesus said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). They left their nets immediately, not because they despised fishing, but because they recognized a higher calling.

Likewise, wherever you are today—whether in a job you love or one you tolerate, in a season of abundance or a season of waiting—God knows exactly where you are. If He has a new path for you, He will guide you in His perfect timing. But until then, every task can be done for His glory. When we shift our focus from merely pleasing men to honoring God, even the most routine duties become acts of worship.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are there areas in your life where you feel “stuck”? How might God be using this season for His purpose?
  •     Do you approach your daily work as something done for God, or do you do it just to get by?
  •     How can you shift your mindset to see your current tasks as acts of worship?
  •     Have you been asking God to move you when He might be calling you to be faithful where you are?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me right where I am. Help me to see my work, responsibilities, and daily tasks as opportunities to serve You. When I feel discouraged or unmotivated, remind me that I am ultimately working for You, not for men. If I am meant to stay where I am, give me patience and purpose. If You are leading me somewhere new, give me clarity and courage. Let my heart be aligned with Your will, and may I honor You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
