Discover how your words shape your journey.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
— Proverbs 18:21 (KJV)
Our tongues can speak life or death into situations, and what we truly love and desire is what we end up with. If you love life and speak goodness into the situations around you, goodness will come back to you. But likewise, if you speak negativity, you’ll reap those consequences too.
Reflection: What kind of fruit are your words producing in your life right now—life or death?
As Christians who have received the Holy Spirit, we believe our words are powerful. God Himself spoke the world into existence. If we are filled with the same Spirit that created the universe, our words, when aligned with Him, can carry life and bring transformation.
Reflection: Do your words reflect the Spirit of God living within you? How can you align your speech more closely with His will?
When situations arise, we must guard our words, ensuring they reflect our relationship with God. It’s easy to let emotions control our speech, but as children of God, we’re called to display the fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Reflection: Which fruit of the Spirit do you struggle to display in your speech? How can you invite God to strengthen this area in your life?
One story that comes to mind is how Michael the Archangel dealt with Satan when they contended over the body of Moses. Scripture tells us Michael didn’t accuse Satan or engage in a heated argument. Instead, he simply said, “The Lord rebuke thee.” (Jude 1:9). Michael didn’t waste energy or words on a fight that wasn’t his to win—he trusted God’s plan.
Reflection: When faced with conflict, how often do you pause to consider whether your response will glorify God? Are there battles you need to entrust to Him instead of fighting with your words?
We will encounter people who push our buttons. They might be unkind or even hostile. But is it worth our energy to respond in anger? Even more importantly, will our response honor God?
Reflection: Think about the last time someone spoke harshly to you. How did you respond? Would God have been pleased with your reaction?
Prayer
Lord, in the name of Jesus, I pray that my thoughts, words, and actions today bring You joy. Help me to speak life into every situation and reflect Your Spirit in all that I say. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
